Online Therapy

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

YOU MAY FEEL DETERRED FROM STARTING ONLINE COUNSELING BECAUSE IT FEELS IMPERSONAL OR IT JUST ISN’T QUITE THE SAME.

Or you may be hesitant to discuss your issues from home, as you may worry about bringing your troubles right to your door, as opposed to leaving them outside the door.

I GET IT.

However, as the great meditation teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn has pointed out: “wherever you go, there you are.” Learning how to create a healing space at home by talking about what’s challenging can be conducive to significant personal growth.

You don’t need to be in the same physical space to feel connected and engaged with another person.

TOGETHER, WE WILL TRY TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL OF PRESENCE THAT MIMICS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN A THERAPY ROOM.

I will create a warm and welcoming space where I will meet you with genuine interest and curiosity. If you can sit there with me and eliminate all distractions, I can say with near certainty that you will have a positive experience.

Wondering about online therapy with insurance?

Your health care coverage may include virtual sessions. I will make sure to check your benefits for “teletherapy” before our first scheduled appointment if you are planning to use your insurance.

Online Therapy FAQ

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy gives you access to counseling from anywhere you are via a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It’s an alternative to traditional office-based counseling that is convenient, effective, and private. Session frequency and duration of treatment will not be impacted by this modality; I will ask for the same level of commitment from you as I do with in-person clients. Similarly, you may opt for a hybrid approach that combines both in-person and online sessions if situations arise that prevent you from making it to my office on a consistent basis.

Is online therapy private and confidential?

Yes. Meeting with me is HIPAA-compliant, which means that I adhere to strict federal and state laws that protect your information. I use a platform called doxy.me, which ensures that all of your data is encrypted, your sessions are anonymous, and none of your information is stored or recorded.

What do I need to connect to an online appointment?

I will send you some information via secure email as soon as we schedule your first appointment with instructions to check in for the virtual visit.

In general, all you need is a computer, tablet, or mobile device with a good internet connection. Doxy.me works automatically in popular browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. No downloads, account registrations, or passwords will be required. If you are using your mobile device or tablet, then you will need to download the free doxy.me app.

are sessions held via video, phone, or chat?

All sessions will be held through video software to ensure that we remain engaged and present with each other throughout the course of our work. If we encounter any connectivity issues that we cannot resolve in a reasonable amount of time, we will complete the session via phone.

Is online therapy really effective?

Absolutely! Online therapy, also known as teletherapy, is a great way to get help and start moving forward in your life. The convenience, ease of access and privacy of online therapy is highly desired by many who cannot otherwise commit to attending in-person appointments regularly. Research has also shown that this form of care is an empowering form of counseling that promotes high levels of satisfaction among clients. Here are just a few studies from the last six years of research about teletherapy:
